Divided Country, Disposable People > Overview

The Korean War, a hiccup in American history books, has been dubbed the "Forgotten War." The 50's were a time of American progress and patriotic fervor, and marked the early years of the Cold War. Across the Pacific, the McCarthy-era anticommunism frenzy justified the killing of untold millions of Koreans - men, women, and children. By no means has this war been 'forgotten' by the Koreans, whose country has long been split in two by the communist-capitalist 38th Parallel. A long history of imperialism and colonialism continues to plague Korea.

In DIVIDED COUNTRY, DISPOSABLE PEOPLE, stories are retold by Korean survivors, many who were small children during the atrocities. Sites of massacres are visited. We hear the stories as told by the US GI's and fighter pilots. Historians and speakers at the Korean War Crimes Tribunal retell the story in hopes of bringing forth the truth about the war and beginning the process of healing.

How does healing begin for the Korean survivors who witnessed the deaths of their families, and for American GI's sent over to kill in the name of patriotism? What about the healing for the ten million families still separated by the impenetrable 38th Parallel? How do we reconcile the past, even if we were not born yet during the Korean War, but instead have inherited the legacy of Imperialism and War? Is there an alternative to war, or is this simply God's Will?
